Nevada County is warning Planning customers about a fraudulent scam involving fake invoices.
Scammers are sending emails that appear to come from Nevada County Planning using County officials’ names and the Nevada County Government Center address. The emails instruct recipients to wire money to pay fraudulent invoices. The scam emails have been sent from Planning.coNevadaCounty.ca@usa.gov, which is not a county email address.
Nevada County Planning never asks customers to make payments by wire transfer.
Customers should not respond to these emails, click on any links or send any payments. Anyone who receives a suspicious email should forward it to CDA.Fiscal@nevadacountyca.gov.
“Protecting our residents from fraud is a top priority,” said Trisha Tillotson, director of Nevada County’s Community Development Agency, which includes the Planning Department. “We encourage everyone to carefully review any payment request and verify it is correct before sending money. If you have any doubts about an invoice, please contact us.”
Customers should remember that Nevada County issues Planning invoices through Accela and can be verified by visiting Accela Citizen Access at permits.NevadacountyCa.gov.
Legitimate payments are accepted in person at the Community Development Agency, 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City, 95959, Suite 170 or by mail to 950 Maidu Ave Suite 170, PO Box 599002, Nevada City, CA 95959-7902 or via LexisNexis www.nevadacountyca.gov/cdapayment. If you have questions or concerns, please call (530) 265-1222.
